Recipes and the recipe book

Save, import and share recipes across the household.

Recipes are shared across the whole household. Anyone can add a recipe, and once it is in the book it is available to plan meals, send to the grocery list, and cook from — on any device.

Importing from a URL

Paste any recipe URL into the import field and Orbrey extracts the title, image, ingredients, and method automatically. Most major recipe sites are supported. Review the imported recipe before saving — you can edit any field before it lands in your book.

Pasting or writing a recipe

Prefer to enter a recipe manually? Use the Add recipe button and fill in the fields directly. Ingredients can be entered as a list; Orbrey parses the quantity, unit, and name automatically so meal planning and pantry tracking work correctly.

Importing with AI

If you use the Orbrey Claude Code plugin, the /recipe-from-url command imports a recipe from any URL and saves it directly to your household recipe book in a single step. You can also photograph a printed recipe card and ask your AI assistant to transcribe and save it.

Organising recipes

Recipes can be tagged by meal type (breakfast, lunch, dinner, snack), dietary notes (vegetarian, gluten-free, dairy-free), and any custom tag you create. Use tags to filter the recipe book and to give the meal planner and AI tools context about your household's preferences.

Cook mode

Tap Cook on any recipe to enter cook mode. In cook mode:

  • The screen stays awake — no more racing to tap before it dims.
  • Timers are embedded in the method steps and fire right where you need them.
  • Serving size is adjustable — tap the serving count at the top and all ingredient amounts scale automatically, whether you are cooking for two or for twelve.
  • Your place in the steps is preserved if you leave the app and come back.

Sending ingredients to the grocery list

From any recipe, tap Add to grocery list. Orbrey diffs the ingredients against what is already in your pantry and only adds what you actually need. If you do not have the pantry feature enabled, all ingredients are added.

Rating and feedback

After cooking, tap the star rating on the recipe. Ratings feed into the meal planner and AI-assisted planning so that highly-rated meals come up more often and low-rated ones are skipped.
